Frankfurt,
Germany, March 11, 1956: Three jazz legends converge backstage
during Jazz at the Philharmonic's visit to the Frankfurt Zoo venue as
promoter-record executive Norman Granz, left, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie
look over a copy of Down Beat magazine. Granz — an active opponent of racism —
signed most of jazz's big names, including Gillespie, to Verve and other record
labels he founded, while Down Beat has been covering the musical genre since
the 1930s.
