Garmisch, Germany, February, 1959: American skier Buddy Werner goes through a gate as he gets ready for the annual Arlberg-Kandahar meet. Werner died in an avalanche in the Swiss Alps in April, 1964, a few weeks after he competed in his third Olympic Games. A youth ski racing program, along with a library and a mountain at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, are named in his honor.
