London, October 5,
1959: Before going on duty at St. James's
Palace, soldiers of the Queen's Guard stand inspection by the adjutant, at
center. The guards' lives had recently been made easier by the placement of
barriers between them and the public. "It's about time," said one.
"We've had enough of that lot. They'd stick pins in you, some of
them." Other annoyances included cigarettes tossed into gun barrels and
oranges stuck on bayonets.
