Mannheim, Germany, May 19, 1979: The
MPs who drove him from the Heidelberg railroad station to Ben Franklin Village
thought he was Telly Savalas, star of the "Kojak" TV
series, and so did fans who gathered to greet him and get his autograph. But it
turns out the bald guy who was said to be unable to ask "who loves ya,
baby?" because of a sore throat was really German insurance agent Horst
Herzog. The incident -- a scam or a misunderstanding, depending on your point
of view -- was a front-page story in Stars and Stripes two days later.
