Paris, June 1,
1961: President John F. Kennedy addresses the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Permanent Council during the first
overseas visit of his presidency. After meetings with French President Charles
De Gaulle, he flew to Vienna for a summit with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev;
on the way home, he visited England and met with Queen Elizabeth and Prime
Minister Harold Macmillan. JFK would have celebrated his 87th birthday today.
