Paris, May 30, 1969: Soviet cosmonauts Aleksei Yeliseyev, left, and Vladimir Shatalov, right, clasp hands with Apollo 9 astronauts Russell L. Schweickart, James A. McDivitt and David R. Scott, left to right at center of photo, after a cocktail reception on a Yakovlev Yak-40 airliner at the Paris Air Show. During the show, the two cosmonauts also climbed aboard the Apollo 8 spacecraft with Schweickart. Seven weeks later, the United States won the race to the moon with the Apollo 11 landing; in 1971, on the Apollo 15 mission, Scott became one of 12 men who have walked on the moon.
