Sarajevo,
Yugoslavia, February 19, 1984: His body outside
the flexible gate but his feet still on the course, Phil Mahre of the United
States heads for a gold medal in the slalom at the 14th Winter Olympic Games.
His twin brother, Steve, took the silver medal in the event. It was a good day
all around for Phil Mahre, whose wife gave birth to a son back in Phoenix.
Mahre is the only American male to win the Overall World Cup title; in fact, he
did so three years in a row in the early 1980s.
